Mullet Fishing 2011: Fishing Days

<-- Latest

20/07/11: Time for 4 carp at the pond during the evening - 'commons' of 4/12, 4/02, 3/07 and a 'mirror' of 3/04.

19/07/11: Pouring rain at the pond - 3 common carp, 5/13, 3/12 and 3/07. Tides looking really good for some mullet at the weekend... Weather looking totally grim...

10/07/11: An evening at the pond - about 50 fish, including a 4lb 8oz common carp.

09/07/11: A very early start for the coast, then torrential rain at 02:30. Improved later, and there were quite a few mullet plus good signs of feeding, but no bites. The final indignity was watching one come right in to the shoreline and start mouthing a piece of floating paper...

03/07/11: About 70 fish at the pond, the best a mirror carp of 5lb 7oz. Tides looking very good for some mullet next weekend...

02/07/11: Around 50 fish at the pond, including mirror carp of 5lb 11oz and 4lb 1oz.

30/06/11: Another few hours at the pond in the evening - included a common carp of 4lb 14oz.

29/06/11: Undecided whether to go fishing, and finally decided quite late to have a go. Best fish were a mirror carp of 3lb 2oz and a common carp of 4lb 14 oz.

26/06/11: Time for a trip to the pond in the evening - 53 fish, including a 3lb 2oz mirror carp and a slightly larger 'common' of 5lb 12oz.

25/06/11: Another day of rudd and the occasional roach at the pond, 137 in total.

19/06/11: Another horrendous day, although the winds eased in the early evening and I was able to get in a few more hours at the pond. Again, about 40 fish, including a beautifully-scaled common carp of 5lb 8oz. Really need some good weather for a trip to the coast...

17/06/11: More atrocious weather - got in a few hours in the evening at the pond. About 40 fish, including a small mirror carp of 3lb 12oz.

16/06/11: Some light relief from the mullet - went to a local pond. Despite truly awful weather, heavy rain and strong blustery winds, caught about 280 fish in total, mainly rudd, with the largest fish of the day a 4lb 5oz common carp. Shame it wasn't a mullet, though...

12/06/11: Tried one of the new spots, but no mullet were seen, and the weather deteriorated rapidly. A brief moment of excitement when the float went under, but it was a very small bass which couldn't resist a nice lump of bread...

11/06/11: Ideal conditions and a very early start, before the wind picked up. The mullet weren't willing to participate, but there were quite a few about. Did some recon later and visited two new locations, and there were mullet in evidence at both. At the second, there was a predominance of truly immense mullet, plus a few much smaller ones around 2-3lb, for comparison.

04/06/11: Managed to find a place out of the wind. Usual abundance of thin-lips, and had one cautious bite on the bread, also.

28/05/11: Tried a different venue. Very strong winds and overcast, couldn't see any fish. Walked up a quiet creek and saw a single large mullet cruising upstream on the surface.

26/05/11: Just been preparing some groundbait, looking forward to 'blanking' again at the weekend :) - then glanced out of the window a moment ago, "...look at that mutha-fishing weather...", as Samuel L. would say - raining hard, blustery winds, normal lead-up to a Bank Holiday then ....

21/05/11: Lots of thin-lipped, seemed to be playing rather than feeding. No sign of any thick-lipped. Still haven't seen a single mullet caught by anyone at any of the venues visited.

14/05/11: Early start - a few mullet about, then that bloody wind again.......... did some recon instead, visited a number of new locations.

09/05/11: Two days 'off' due to strong winds, same again today (24kmph) but went anyway. Loads of weed came in with the tide, fishing very difficult. A few mullet breaking surface, but that's about it.

06/05/11: Different venue, same result. Plenty of mullet present, none interested in getting caught on this occasion.

02/05/11: 06:00 - Feeling of deja vu, very windy again, same outcome.

01/05/11: 06:00 - Weather site shows 39 kmph winds, from ENE - quick look outside confirms - back to sleep.

29/04/11: Late tide, soon grew dark. Fished the lures and also floatfished bread - no takers again.

27/04/11: Evening high tide. Mullet all around the bread groundbait, no sign of any thick-lipped, all thin-lips - no chance. Still makes for better viewing than most TV offerings ....

26/04/11: Same story, plenty of mullet, but no interest in the lure at all today.

25/04/11: Saw loads of mullet again - quite a few of the thin-lipped followed the baited lure, sometimes with real intent, but didn't actually take it. Was even ready to fetch the shotgun at one point ;)    Caught a few small bass, greedy little blighters ....

24/04/11: A good day - saw loads of mullet, and even though none were caught (either by me or by other anglers present), started learning their behaviour at various stages of the tide. Had a really good bite on bread early in the session, also had a few line-bites - snagged a 1.5cm scale from a small mullet at one point, probably a thin-lipped - there were a lot of them on the move. On the whole, quite excited, apart from the sunburn ....
